Natalie in her Garden is a play produced in 2017 by the Hampshire College Theatre Program. I served as the scenic designer and technical director for this project.
I worked closely with the playwright capture the magical realism aesthetic of the world. The most important elements were the separation of Natalie’s Garden from the icebox that she is trapped in, and in contrast, the suggestion that the icebox and apartment exist in the same space.
The crux of the production is the moment when the four women in the icebox and Steven’s current girlfriend realize their own power to shake their abusers’ hold on them, thus breaking Steven’s world – along with their icy prison.
